CHAPTER ELEVEN

THE NIGHT AIR WAS WARM with currents of cool swirling around their feet as they walked toward downtown Love Falls, warning of a potential storm to come. Sky and Joy had said their goodbyes soon after Sky returned from the bathroom and left the Zahara household, setting off down the darkening streets, taking the long way, the back roads, downtown.

Joy was walking on a cloud. She couldn't remember the last time she had had so much fun with her family. It was almost like the divorce wasn't happening at all. It was almost like old times, but better. She could almost see how the family would move on after this whole ordeal, how it would be okay.

And she was even starting to forgive her father.

"I like your family," Sky said, echoing her thoughts.

"They aren't too much?"

"Not at all," Sky said. "You're right, though. They are definitely keeping something from you."

"Yes." Joy's thoughts had been floating with the clouds, but now they came back to earth. Her parents were divorcing. And no one knew what it was going to be like after that monumental change. Those feelings she had just been having? They were flimsy things, things that could dissolve without warning.

"Did you ever get the sense that your mother may be the one with the secrets?"

"Not until tonight. That crew thing was odd."

"Mmm..." Sky's hand brushed against Joy's.

Joy didn't know what had gotten into her, but she couldn't help herself. She took Sky's hand in hers. "Is this okay?"

Sky looked up at her. Joy could see something in her eyes, and if she was more socially perceptive, she might even be able to tell what it was. If pressed, she would say that she saw there the fulfillment of her hopes, but she didn't dare think that in full. When Sky answered, she spoke simply. "It is, Joy,"

Yes.

They walked along for a moment before Sky spoke again. "Do you remember what you asked the other night?"

Joy had done everything she could to push that memory deep down into the dungeon of dark memories. It was the only way she could avoid embarrassment. So, she shook her head, just in case Sky wasn't talking about that question.

"Oh, come on." Sky squeezed her hand. "Honesty, remember? I'll be honest. When you asked me if I wanted to have sex with you, I was scared, but today... Joy... I couldn't keep my eyes off of you. You look so sexy in those jeans, and if you're willing, I think we should act on this attraction. Do what you suggested. As, you know, friends."

They were walking along a field with an old park on the far side, the one with a seesaw and a slide and a merry-go-round. Joy looked at the long straight sidewalk ahead, at the road she could take, the one where she didn't sleep with Sky. The one where they just remained friends and never kissed, never did any of that. Just held hands. She tugged Sky's hand, walking
